Peniche is in the Estramadura (Silver Coast) region of Portugal, one hour's drive north of Lisbon. Like most of Portugal, it is a lovely agricultural and wine producing region, with many historical villages and towns. Obidos, Caldas da Raina, Mafra, and the palaces and castle of Sintra are all within easy reach for day trips. Even the ancient city of Coimbra, the shrine of Fatima and the bull-fighting town of Santarem are within reach of Peniche. However, there are many other places that are charmingly historic but less known. It's a region well worth exploring, especially as good food, excellent wine and hospitality are found wherever you go .
